December 01, 2009

MJHS 2009 Veteran's Day Activities    Slide Show

On Friday, November 6, Meridian Junior High School celebrated Veterans Day. During the shortened day the students attended three different activities. They wrote letters to be sent to soldiers overseas; they completed a mini boot camp, and they listened to two local servicemen, Brad Dewey and Thomas Burke. Brad Dewey is a Stillman Valley High School graduate and is in the Navy reserves. Tom is an Oregon High School graduate and is currently in the National Guard and recently returned from Iraq. The two men shared their experiences with the students.

The day concluded with an assembly in the gym. The local Boy Scouts presented the flag. The local Girl Scouts led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The 8th grade band and chorus together performed the Star Spangled Banner. The chorus, which was comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, sang My America. The 8th grade band performed Armed Forces Salute and America the Beautiful. Students were asked to bring a Veteran to the assembly. Those students introduced their Veterans and explained what military branch they were in and if they had served in any wars and anything special they wanted to share. The day concluded with Brad Dewey sharing how important it is to stay in school and to always try to do your best. A member of Rachel’s Challenge thanked the school for participating in the “Stack the Stage” and dime drive. “The band and chorus sounded great. They worked very hard over the past two weeks putting these songs together, “said Kelly Gale, one of the organizers.

Students “Stacked the Stage” by bringing in items to be sent to local soldiers overseas. We collected enough items to stack 14 boxes. The school also held a dime drive. The students brought in change to help pay for the shipping of the packages overseas. We collected over $343.00. Carla Miller, one of the organizers of the event was very pleased with the turn out. “Our students are great. They really stepped up for our soldiers. Our school was decorated in red, white, and blue, and students received either a red or white star for their donation to be placed on their locker. We are hoping that this becomes an annual event for our district.” Organizers, Carla Miller and Kelly Gale, would like to thank the students and staff at MJHS for their support and generosity for our soldiers overseas. They would also like to thank the Veterans that participated in our event and for their service to our country.
